ME/Chronic Fatigue/Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome
Myalgic Encephalomyelotis (ME) / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)/ Post Viral Fatigue Syndrome (PVFS) involve a wide range of symptoms such as:
Muscle and joint pain / muscle twitching.
Chronic Physical exhaustion.
Difficulties concentrating and mental exhaustion.
IBS symptoms / gastric problems / digestive problems.
feeling low (medically known as depression).
Anxiety / poor memory / breathing difficulties.
Headaches and certain food intolerances.
Irregular heartbeats / palpitations
ME, CFS and PVFS are a group of quite controversial illnesses. I will not be judging you.
There are many debates frequently occuring over the potential cause and diagnosis of this group of illnesses. Its very understandable why people suffering these illnesses often feel judged and are indeed angry and upset due to the fact that for many years ther have been treated as malingerers. These feeling are understandable and to compund this, it has often been suggested to some suffering that there are 'putting it on' or that its 'all in the mind' by some 'professionals'. There is even confusion amongst 'professionals' and 'specialists' as to what to even call and label what a person in suffering and the terms PVFS / ME / Chronic fatigue are often used interchangeably whilst others believe that each 'label' represents a distinct condition. This all does not help a sufferer at all, and leaves them feeling powerless.
Regardless of whether symptoms have been triggered by a viral illness or not, the symptoms that are experienced are very real!
Those suffering from this group of illnesses have real physical problems, which are very debilitating and distressing. To this end, i do not care or have any idea whatsoever of the potential causes for those that experience this group of illnesses. What i care about is helping those suffering get better.
I have treated many people with success using the THRIVE programme who were suffering ME / CFS/ PVFS. With all illnesses or physical problem, examining our personalities and ways of thinking can and is, highly beneficial. People's psychological processes have a huge impact upon them physically. Many symptoms are producded during a stress response, and if people encounter frequent and sustained stress, there immune system may suffer for it. This fact, in conjunction with our limiting beliefs, such as low self-esteem, social anxiety and an external locus of control, along with peoples unhelpful thinking styles, can strongly impact upon how a person responds to an illness, and hence, hinder their recovery.
